Students explored stable structures around the world; we especially focussed on landmark skyscrapers such as Taipei 101 in Taiwan and Burj Khalifa in Dubai. We investigated the question- Can we build earthquake proof structures? They learned that earthquake resistant buildings use various techniques such as base isolation, dampers and ball bearings to stay stable.
The students build a ‘Truss Bridge’ using magnetic sticks and balls to explore and understand that this load-bearing structure is stable because the connected elements form triangular units.
They then build models of earthquake resistant buildings and tested them on class made earthquake simulators.
